Colon Investigative Tests

If you are having troubles with your colon the chances of you undergoing a series of tests is probably very good.   This article gives a walkthrough of the lower GI series; a test that uses x-rays to investigate the large intestine looking for abnormal growths, ulcers, polyps and colon cancer.

Preparation is key to a successful lower GI series.   In this case, preparation involves emptying thc colon.   Your diet will have to be restricted a few days before the test to just liquids and non-sugar, non-dairy products.   The day before you will only be limited to clear liquids and possibly an enema.

The next step involves the radiologist infusing a thick imaging liquid into the colon.   This liquid coats the inside of the colon making it and more importantly defects in it show clearly on the x rays.   The liquid is chiefly made from barium, which is why this procedure is often referred to a barium enema.

During the test, the barium infusion can make you feel bloated.   Often you will have a sense of fullness with pressure in your stomach.   This leads to the desire to rush to the bathroom for a few minutes to empty the bowel.

Unfortunately this is just the nerves triggering a natural response to a full colon.   The infusion of the barium stimulates this bowel reflex.   Often, even though there is the urge to have a bowel movement, nothing comes out.   In fact, over the next few days post-lower GI test, you may experience constipation or oddly colored feces.   This is due to the barium

Your colon follows the edges of your body cavity so you will likely have to readjust while the x rays are being taken.   The entire process should take about one to two hours.

The lower GI series is a good way to ‘see' the colon in a non-invasive manner.   The benefits far outweigh the discomfort and minimal indignities that are required of the patient.
